HOOFREKEN /  MENTAL MATHS

voorblad

WORKSHEETS AND ONLINE TESTS

v  Dit werk veral goed by groot klasse, waar mondelinge hoofreken nie so suksesvol is nie.

Many Grade 4-6 learners struggle with more difficult Math concepts (e.g. adding of fractions and long division) simply because they do not know their bonds and tables.

We address this problem with:

v  300 mental maths worksheets for the intermediary phase (± Grade 4 to 7-level)

v  The first set of ten "Basic Mental Maths" worksheets may be used at the beginning of the year to establish whether learners know their basic times tables and bonds.

v  The following sets of worksheets are more difficult and test learners' knowledge of necessary concepts.

v  Worksheets are graded - Level 1 is easier, more or less Gr 4-standard, and Level 4, ± Gr 7-standard, more difficult.

v  There are a few remedial worksheets as well, e.g. to address specific problems, e.g. division, problems with 0 and 1.

v  Most worksheets have 50 questions and they are ideal to use for 5 to 10 minutes at the beginning of a lesson, or as determined by the teacher

v  These worksheets are used successfully in large classes where oral mental maths often fails.

v  Also available are memorandums for worksheets, fact sheets with times tables to learn as well as graphs for learners to record results.

v  Learners can also use our online exercises to practise at school or at home.

NOTAS VIR OPVOEDERS

A NOTE TO EDUCATORS

v  Moenie vashaak by 'n som nie.

There are many ways to use and incorporate these worksheets in your teaching. A few suggestions for inexperienced educators:

a)    The table shows the number of each exercise and what the exercise entails.

b)    Starting with the Basic Mental Maths set A1, do one exercise per day with the whole class.

c)     Ensure that the learners are aware of the following before commencing:

v  Don’t get stuck on one sum.  If you do not know the answer, continue with the next sum and return to it once you have completed the rest.

v  If you finish with time to spare, go through your work again and check that your answers are correct.

d)    Learners get exactly 5 minutes to complete a test (A1-A10).  More or less time can be given for other exercises.

e)    They then swap tests and everyone marks someone else’s work.

f)     The educator reads out the questions as well as the answers (e.g. 6 x 5 = 30) – this serves as a further auditory reinforcement of their tables.

g)    The learner marking the work, counts the marks, fills them in and signs the test before returning it to the appropriate learner.

h)    Each learner then plots his/her results on the graph. (The choice is yours: bar graph or line graph, or a variety of types – good consolidation of data handling skills).

i)      Learners can also calculate their totals and/or average marks (calculators may be used for these calculations).

j)     Learners do the corrections for homework, mark them on the tables worksheet using a highlighter or a coloured pencil crayon, and then go and learn those that were wrong.

k)    After completing the first group of ten exercises (A1), you can use the results to divide your class into two groups.

l)      The weaker group then does the Level 1 exercises (intervention) – you should now be able to identify where each learners struggles (e.g. division).

m)   If an assistant or remedial teacher is available, he/she could assist the weaker group, or you could give it as part of the homework programme.

n)    The strong group, those who already know their tables and combinations well, continue with the other Level 2 and Level 3 exercises. In this way, each learner is able to progress at his/her own pace.

o)    Weaker learners can also do the Level 2 and 3 exercises – give them extra time or allow them to do their calculations on paper.

p)    Competitions and prizes are very motivating – reward full marks or a good improvement, or challenge the whole class to achieve a better average.

q)    Use our set of Quia internet exercises at http://www.thinkonline.co.za/quia.htm to practise at school or at home.

MATHS24-kaarte/cards

Excellent game to improve mental maths and number concept

maths24

Download these cards for free from http://www.thinkonline.co.za/gratis.htm   ~ print and cut out

Each card has a different combination of 4 numbers. Cards are worth 1, 2 or 3 points, rated by difficulty.

Look at the middle of a card to determine its point value:  1 dot = 1 point; 2 dots = 2 points; 3 dots = 3 points

OBJECT OF THE GAME:

Be the first player to make 24 with all 4 numbers on the card.

You can add, subtract, multiply or divide. You have to use all four numbers. Each number may be used only once.

For example:  if the numbers are 2, 2, 6, 8:

You could make 24 by explaining (8-2) x (6-2) = 24.

(There might be more than one solution)

Don't get mixed up with a 6 and a 9 - every number is underlined, so you can clearly see the difference!

HOW TO PLAY:

Count off a stack of cards from the deck (we suggest you use 12 cards for any easy start).

Any number of players can play.

(We suggest two players against each other so that every child is involved - rotate partners after 10-15 minutes and shuffle the cards.
A tournament where winners play against winners, etc. works well and keeps everyone challenged)

All players are playing at the same time, for the same top card.

Start playing using only one point or two point cards. Add the "three point" cards as you get better.

To win a card, you must be the first to figure out how to make 24.

Claim your card by saying "I got it".  If you are the first to claim the card and correctly explain a solution, you win that card.

Once you take that card, the next card is in play.

The winner is the one with the most points after all cards are claimed.

Total your score by adding up the point value of your cards.

For example: If you have 4 "one point" and 3 'two point" cards at the end of the game, your score is 10
